Certified Quilt Judge

For many years, Dena Dale Crain worked not only as a quiltmaker and teacher, but also as a professional quilt judge. Her judging experience provided a unique opportunity to study thousands of quilts, evaluating design, craftsmanship, color, originality, and presentation across a wide range of styles and skill levels.
Certified through the South African Quilters Guild, Dena served the quilting community as both an educator and evaluator. Her approach to judging emphasized encouragement, constructive feedback, and recognition of each maker’s individual goals and achievements.
Judging deepened Dena’s understanding of the principles that distinguish successful quilts: thoughtful design, effective use of color and value, technical skill, and clear visual communication. These insights continue to influence her writing, teaching materials, pattern design, and creative work.

In addition to formal judging, Dena has extensive experience organizing exhibitions, hanging shows, assisting with quilt displays, and helping guilds present textile work to the public. This practical experience broadened her understanding of how quilts are viewed, interpreted, and appreciated in both competitive and exhibition settings.

Although Dena is no longer accepting judging engagements, this experience remains an important part of the professional background reflected throughout the Dena Dale Crain Creative Archive.
